AN APPEAL has been made to help trace the names of the original gardeners who were employed by the Duncombe Park estate prior to the outbreak of the First World War.

Helmsley Walled Garden is aiming to put up a plaque to remember the men and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict.

Mike I'Anson, Helmsley Walled Garden Manager and Grace Belton, wife of the chairman, are hoping the readers of the Gazette & Herald can help with the names after the original records were destroyed.

Mrs Belton said: "All the gardeners joined up, 19 in total, but records have been lost and we have come up against constant dead ends.

"This year is the Garden's 20th anniversary since it opened after being reclaimed from a wasteland of weeds and we would like to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One with a plaque naming the gardeners, most of whom died, and plant a garden of remembrance."
