AN illustrated talk about the effects of the First World War on a Ryedale village will be given at Pickering library, on Tuesday, at 2pm.
Jim Hall, of the Appleton-le-Moors History group, will give the talk about how group members discovered the forgotten wartime history of the village.
Using never-before-seen material, the group has documented the findings in a book, Appleton-le Moors and the Great War, drawing upon letters written from the front line, diaries of the people left behind and photographs from the William Hayes collection of German prisoners of war who were based in the village.
Tickets for the talk are free and are available from Pickering library or by phoning 08453 005157.
As a precursor to Jim’s talk there will be an exhibition of photographs and documents from surrounding villages at the library. The local history groups of Thornton-le-Dale, Rosedale, Sinnington, Lockton, Levisham and Appleton-le Moors will contribute to the event, which will run from today until July 25.
