THIS week’s selection of photographs comes from John Stone’s book Then & Now Malton.
Clockwise from above, Lt-Gen Beden Powell opening Malton Rifle Club in Water Lane on March 26, 1908.
He gave the club a silver challenge cup, which was to be presented to the winner of the North and East Riding ladies’ rifle team; the Princess Royal visited Malton Show in 1989; Mr Alfred Boyes in Malton’s first taxi at the end of the 19th century; the then chairman of Norton Council, Mr C Hesletine, greets the Queen at Malton Station after the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, which was held in York Minster on June 8, 1961; Malton’s fire engine was named the Countess Fiztwilliam on August 8, 1914, when it was purchased for £1,100; in 1999, Malton and Norton were hit by floods and the towns were closed for a week.
After the clean-up operation, Prince Andrew came to meet the people who had done the work. He is pictured talking to members of Malton fire brigade in Norton car park.
