A testimonial for the 7th Earl of Carlisle is to go on display in The Pride Of Yorkshire exhibition at Castle Howard.
In 1841, George Howard, the 7th Earl of Carlisle and owner of the stately home was unsuccessful in a Parliamentary election. As a result, 38,000 of his supporters signed a testimonial which they then presented to him.
He was an MP for Yorkshire from 1830 until 1832, then for West Riding until 1841 and again from 1846 to 1848. The title for the exhibition, Pride Of Yorkshire: George Howard, An Eminent Victorian Earl, was inspired by the Bradford Observer who referred to him as “the pride of Yorkshire”. It is being set up by Dr Christopher Ridgway, curator of Castle Howard, and David Gent, a PhD student.
Objects associated with the Earl, including the testimonial, will go on display at the exhibition. It will also show what kind of life a Victorian member of aristocracy would have led.
The exhibition will run from September 5 to November 1.
